Biting (Why It Happens & How To Stop It)

Why does my child bite?  This is a very common question for parents of younger children to ask.  Here are some reasons why your child may be biting:

  • Exploration:  One of the ways a child learns is by tasting things.  If you notice with younger children everything goes in their mouths.  Sometimes a child will put things in their mouths that they shouldn't.
  • Teething:  The same thing goes with teething.  Sometimes when a child chews on something it is a sign that they are teething.  It relieves their gums to chew on things.
  • Cause & Effect:  Children are continuously learning new things.  For instance, a child will learn that if you flip the switch on the wall the light will turn on.  With a younger child, if they bite someone they get a loud scream of protest.
  • Attention:  Attention is attention, whether it's negative or positive.
  • Imitation:  If a child sees someone else try something they tend to try it too.
  • Frustration:  When a child cannot communicate that they are unhappy or that they want something they will turn to biting, hitting, or pushing.
  • Stress:  A lot of things can cause stress in a child's life.  Sometimes it is something that is irrelevant to an adult.  A child will relieve their tension by biting.
